To protect kids, parents need to ask about how guns are stored
&Mdash; To recognize ASK Day, city leaders and local physicians met today to discuss children and gun safety issues at the West Palm Beach library.ASK stands for Asking Saves Kids, and was created by the Center to Prevent Youth Violence to promote parental awareness of keeping children safe around firearms.
"It's critical to be able to make sure that [kids] are safe," said West Palm Beach Mayor Jeri Muoio, "and to be able to ask whether firearms are in the home."
Sara Connolly, a pediatrician with Pediatric Partners, said that asking whether there are firearms in the home is on par with questioning parents about pools and pets.
"There are parents who are going to be gun shy," Connolly said. "But it's always relevant."
Among measures that can be taken to protect children is using gun locks and educating children on what to do if they come in contact with a gun, speakers said.
St. Mary's Medical Center admits 1,500 trauma patients a year, said Dr. Michael West, a trauma surgeon. Many of them are pediatric patients, and at least 4 percent of the injuries stem from incidents with firearms, he said.
Since the passage of state legislation that bars doctors from speaking with children about firearms when it's not a medical inquiry, doctors can face up to $10,000 in fines and criminal charges for misuse of information about gun ownership.
Connolly said attention should now be shifted from the debate about the new law to encouraging parents to ask how guns are stored in their homes.
Some parents may believe doctors are being to meddlesome if they ask children about guns in their homes, Connolly said.
"People feel that by giving up that information it will be used against them, and it's not the case," Connolly said. "As a medical practitioner, there are several things that are relevant when dealing with a patient."
If this was about safety, wouldn't it be reasonable to put up posters and have brochures in the waiting room to address safe firearms storage? Also, for swimming pools, car seats, etc. This is done for many diseases and conditions. If parents don't have their children taught to swim or at least "drown proofed", maybe, they should be arrested. Ask about that Doctor. The questions are pure AMA liberal agenda. Do the doctors also ask if the parents are glad they didn’t get an abortion?Palm Beach Library - News
