No solution in sight to worsening power crisis
Complaints of prolonged power outages were received from several areas of the city, including Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Malir, Shah Faisal Colony, Saddar, DHA, Korangi, Landhi, North Karachi, Organi, Gadap and Bin Qasim towns. The Meteorological Department recorded 35 degrees Centigrade as maximum temperature with 70 per cent humidity on Saturday, as the people were made to suffer prolonged instances of load-shedding that continued till late evening hours. This situation infuriated the area people after KESC did not take any action to rectify the problem despite several complaints, while the KESC staffers had been openly demanding hefty amount as bribe for replacing the damaged PMT. Some of the area people were forced to relocate their families to the houses of their relatives in other localities in order to avoid further suffering from week-long power breakdown. However, the KESC management blamed the protesting utility workers for blocking the rectification of electricity supply-related complaints in various localities, alleging that the miscreants among the protesting employees had been resorting to sabotage and damaging electricity supply networks and installations in several areas, which was causing prolonged power breakdowns. Such open accusations against the agitating workers were reiterated by the KESC management just one day after it held a fresh round of talks with the representatives of various labour bodies in the utility. The KESC management sounded optimistic after the talks on Friday evening that further such rounds of negotiations with the representatives of KESC labour bodies would settle the issues. It said: “The general public in Karachi has been suffering because of this abnormal happening where a union is freely allowed to sabotage and damage power supply system to unlimited extent. The citizens are facing violent voltage fluctuation because of the unauthorized removal of neutral leads, prolonged localized outages due to blocked repair work, and disability of countless transformers, substations and feeders through damage, burning or tempering by union miscreants. “The union miscreants have also illegally captured the KESC’s mechanical stores and preventing the duty employees from receiving electricity transformers and other equipment and cables for replacement of broken or damaged equipment on public complaints. An armed group of the union hooligans kidnapped four members of a repair team working at a local fault near Awami Markaz on Saturday.Plants For Hot Humid Zones - News
