Bailey, Millie and Lady were among the first to arrive. They touched noses, sniffed about and greeted each other under the pecan tree that shades Broad Street United Methodist Church in downtown Mooresville. The dogs, with their owners in tow, gathered on the lawn for the church's second annual Blessing of the Animals, which the Rev. Amy Freeze officiated. It was late afternoon June 5, hot and sunny with dark, stormy clouds in the distance. Lady, a yorkie/Chihuahua mix, perched prettily in the arms of Rodney Assalone. Bailey, a 3-year-old corgi, tested the obstacle course that her owners, Kristina Thoennes and Ellie Hand-Thoennes, were setting up for post-blessing activities. Millie, a 1-year-old pug, led Ethan Beaver and his mother, Melissa Beaver, from guest to guest. Stormy, the only cat, stayed on higher ground in the arms of her owner Ron Higdon. Higdon and his daughter, Olivia Higdon, 15, like many of those who attended, live in Mooresville's historic neighborhood just next to the church. Freeze formed a circle of prayer with more than 20 dogs, one cat and their families. "Let us pray," was answered with a resounding woof-woof from Kobi, a 6-year-old Eskimo spitz. "The consequence is the barking," said Freeze before reading from Psalm 104: "How many are your works, Lord! In wisdom you made them all; the Earth is full of your creatures. There is the sea, vast and spacious, teeming with creatures beyond number - living things both large and small." And both large and small they were. Hope, a 3-year-old Chihuahua, attending her first-ever blessing with Liebe Brown, won the prize for smallest animal. She stood alongside 7-month-old Layla, a Great Dane puppy weighing 90pounds. Layla attended with, Laura Scherczinger, her children, and their golden retriever. "This is important to me," said Scherczinger. "These are God's animals. We all get blessed. They should be blessed too."

This and that at the shelter: Please help local homeless shelter pets by participating in the Fifth Annual Tommy H. Lipford Memorial 4-Person Golf Scramble which will be held on Saturday, June 18, at 1 p.m. at the Dyersburg Municipal Course. Lunch will be served to participants at noon. We currently have a purebred Chinese pug, a purebred Pom, a Pom/Chihuahua mix, a basset-mix pup, feist, some beautiful shepherds, a corgi/Chihuahua mix pup, a heeler mix, an Australian shepherd/collie/heeler-mix pup, a corgi mix, chocolate, black, and yellow labs adults/pups, a beautiful little beagle, a small Pom/Australian shepherd house dog, a small Jack/basset mix, five tiny feist puppies, some pug/feist/Chihuahua puppies, and many more. On the feline side we have several stunning blue-eyed Siamese mix, a longhaired tortie, dilute calico and torties, tabbies of all colors, a huge orange-and-white male who is a gentle giant, and adorable kittens of every color. 'Tiger' is a huge orange-and-white kitty who is already neutered and declawed. All he needs now is a loving home. He must be an indoor kitty. 'Jezebel' is a stunning longhaired calico. She enjoys having her ears scratched and wants to be your companion cat. 'Hubert' is a precious corgi/Chihuahua mix with large "bat" ears. He loves everyone and wants attention. He enjoys being held and wants to be where you are. 'Hunter' is a sweet family-type beagle boy. He never meets a stranger and has personality plus. Please give these deserving pets a loving home. All of our shelter pets are desperately seeking forever homes. Time is of the essence.

Please foster to save lives by giving more space at the shelter for the daily influx of 20 or more pets. If you are an animal lover, consider volunteering on your own schedule. We appreciate all monetary donations, which keep our doors open. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and own the building, all equipment, pay staff, utilities, etc. For instance, we are now having trouble with two of our four air conditioners, which keeps the shelter cool and comfortable for the pets, also problems with our commercial-size washer/dryer which runs almost non-stop from the time we open until we close, seven days a week.
