Sacramento native Scott McCarron | Total Sports Sacramento
PGA touring pro Scott McCarron was born in Sacramento on July 10, 1965. His family moved to the Bay Area and then on to the Napa Valley where he attended Vintage High School. A number of his family members still live in Sacramento, including his parents (Barry and Gloria) and sister, Barri-Lynn McCarron, her husband Joey and their two daughters Taylor and Madison. McCarron played golf at UCLA, graduating in 1988 with a degree in history and joined the PGA Tour in 1992. A three-time Tour winner, he finished in the top 10 at the 1996 Masters and the 1997 U.S. Open and PGA Championships. He, his wife, Jennifer, and the couple’s two daughters, Courtney and Cassidy live in La Quinta.
Scott spoke recently with Total Sports Magazine editor Scott Johnston.
Total Sports Magazine: What are some of your best memories of Sacramento?
Scott McCarron: I came back to Sacramento after college and really enjoyed my time there; doing things I hadn’t done in a while because I’d been playing golf so much. Skiing, playing softball, flag football, team tennis, stuff like that. It’s a great place to live, I really enjoyed it. My favorite golf course is Rancho Murieta. I think the north course is probably one of the toughest in the Sacramento area. When I come home that’s where I like to go. I get back up there three or four times a year.
Total Sports Magazine: What advice do you give young players in regard to improving both their mental and physical approaches to the game?
Scott McCarron: There’s no short cuts in golf, you have to put the time in. You’ve got to play as much competition as you can. Even when it’s just practicing with a buddy, try to have little competitions; putting competitions, getting up and down, trying to hit the 150-yard maker. All those type of things help. When I was growing up we played all day long, competing with each other. I don’t play golf for a living, I play tournament golf for a living and there’s a big difference. You have to be mentally prepared every shot you hit. You have to train from an early age to thrive on those shots you have to hit in the heat of the moment.
Total Sports Magazine: What is the weirdest thing you’ve seen on Tour?
Scott McCarron: I think one of the weirdest things I’ve seen was in 1996. I was standing on the 18th green at the Freeport-McDermott Classic and I had a five-shot lead. A fan jumped out of the stands in just his underwear and jumped into the lake, right next to a 15-foot alligator. When he saw that alligator he got out of there pretty quick. It was pretty distracting, but all I had to do was two-putt for my first Tour win.
