Lexar Echo USB-flashdrives voor automatische backups

Met de Echo MX en ZX brengt Lexar twee nieuwe USB-flashdrives uit die het bedrijf bestempeld heeft als ideaal backupmedium. Bij het insteken wordt namelijk automatisch de Echo software opgestart, die incrementele backups maakt van het systeem en ze bovendien meteen versleutelt. Uiteraard kun je met hetzelfde programma ook herstelpunten weer terugzetten. 

De Echo MX ziet er op het eerste gezicht uit als een reguliere USB-stick, maar wie beter kijkt zal al gauw de capaciteitsmeter ontdekken. Deze geeft aan in hoeverre er nog vrije ruimte aanwezig is op het medium, ook wanneer het geheel niet in een USB-poort gestoken is. De flashdrive verschijnt met capaciteiten van 8 to 128 GB, waarbij het topmodel lees- en schrijfsnelheden van respectievelijk 30 MByte/s en 17 MByte/s moet kunnen halen. De 16 GB uitvoering houdt er een ietwat lagere schrijfsnelheid van 13 MByte/s op na, terwijl dit bij de instapper nog verder terugloopt tot 10 MByte/s en lezen bovendien met maximaal 28 MByte/s gaat.

Lexars Echo ZX betreft een relatief kleine USB-flashdrive die door zijn afmetingen met een opslaggrootte van maximaal 32 GB verschijnt. De beperkte afmetingen maken de drive geschikt om min of meer permanent in een USB-poort te laten zitten, zodat een backup van belangrijke data altijd voorhanden is. De Echo ZX houdt er leesnelheden van 28 MByte/s op na, en 15 MByte/s bij schrijfacties. Alleen het instapmodel moet het stellen met een maximale schrijfsnelheid van 10 MByte/s.

Beide USB-flashdrives zijn standaard uitgerust met de Echo backupsoftware. Door de drive in een vrije USB-poort te steken, kunnen automatisch incrementele backups van de gehele schijf, of alleen belangrijke bestanden worden gemaakt. Deze worden desgewenst beveiligd met een 128-bit AES-versleuteling, zodat bij eventueel verlies niet alle data open en bloot op straat komt te liggen.

In de Verenigde Staten krijgen de Echo MX drives prijskaartjes van $29,99, $54,99, $99,99, $199,99 en $399,99 mee, in volgorde van oplopende capaciteit. De ZX modellen gaan voor dezelfde prijs over de toonbank: $29,99, $54,99 en $99,99. Vooralsnog zijn prijzen voor de Europese markt nog niet bekend gemaakt.
