Bronx International Film Festival planners hope to make viewers think twice ...
For a group of inmates at the infamous Sing Sing Correctional Facility, the path to redemption begins in the classroom.
A new documentary, "Zero Percent," highlights the Hudson Link college program, which is credited with transforming the lives of more than 100 men at the maximum security state prison.
Thursday, the award-winning film kicks off the annual Bronx International Film Festival at the Lovinger Theatre at Lehman College.
Program director Hector Olivieri saw parallels in the documentary's message and common misperceptions about the Bronx.
"The message you take away from the film is 'Don't judge a book by its cover,'" he said. "That's one of the reasons why we're kicking off the festival with this documentary. It's our way of saying, 'Don't judge a borough by its name.'"
Formerly the Bronx Independent Film Festival, this year's event was renamed to reflect the growing number of entries - 24 this year - from around the world, including films from India, Spain and Austria.
Some of the U.S. entries include "Words," the story of a woman and a deaf man falling in love; "You Have the Right to an Attorney," a documentary about the Bronx Defenders Office. and "Rumbleseat," an animated short based on the music of indie rockabilly band, The Sadies.
"The trick is always trying to find a balance, but we have some of everything," Olivieri said.
This is the ninth year of the film festival, which organizers said seeks to build on the borough's long theater history.
In the early 1900s, the Bronx was home to two renowned silent film studios, Edison Studios and Biograph Studios. Film festival director Maggie Krupka is looking to celebrate that history and expand on it.
"We want to change the perception of what the Bronx has to offer and to expose people in the Bronx to international films," she said.
When the film festival first started, organizers had to comb the country just to get 40 entries.
This year, the four-person crew sifted through more than 300 films vying for 24 spots and top honors. A $1,000 award is given to the best narrative and the best documentary.
"The perception is that the Bronx doesn't have much culture," Krupka said. "Our mission is to change that."
