“Boss” movie filming at Joliet Restaurant
Film crews are taking over a downtown Joliet diner today for “Boss,” a movie about a fictional mayor of Chicago set to be released this fall.
John Georgouses, who owns Joliet Restaurant, 22 W. Clinton St., said Sunday he signed a contract with Boss Kane Productions to allow the company to use his 1950s-looking diner for a day of shooting. (Photos: Movie crew invades Joliet diner)
“It’s like winning the lotto,” said Georgouses, who also owns the building where the first Dairy Queen opened 70 years ago. “I’m very happy because we’re going to get a little publicity. I hope it will be good for the downtown.”
The movie, starring Kelsey Grammer as Mayor Tom Kane, began shooting in Chicago April 27. It will be an eight-episode TV movie airing on Starz in October.
Grammer will not be in Joliet, but actors Jeff Hephner (“Hellcats”) and Kathleen Robertson (“90210″) are in Joliet, said Andy Lipschultz, a publicist for Boss Kane Production. The crew will film two scenes at the diner, he said, and then head to a farm on Black Road in Will County this afternoon.
Ben Benson, a Joliet spokesman, confirmed that the “Boss” has started filming at the Joliet Restaurant and planned to film in other parts of the area. He said the production company was looking for an old farmhouse and a rundown motel.
The restaurant was closed Monday and “no parking” signs were put on parking meters Sunday evening. Filming was scheduled to start at 6 a.m., said Georgouses, who has owned the diner for 20 years.
Georgouses, who is being paid twice his daily revenue for use of the restaurant and will also feed the crew, said he was told about 100 people would be on scene for the shooting.
Georgouses said members of the production team who came to restaurant to eat liked the 1950s feel and asked if they could take some pictures. Several other officials from Boss Kane Production visited the diner before he signed a deal last week.
The diner hasn’t changed since opening it 20 years ago, Georgouses said. Back then, the restaurant had been closed for six months and businesses in downtown Joliet were fleeing. He said he believes the restaurant had been in operation at that location since at least the 1950s.
In mid-May, advertisements on Craigslist sought extras for several scenes in the movie. On Location Vacation, a web site that tracks filming locations for movies and TV shows, tweeted May 31 that “Boss” was shooting at State Street and Hubbard in Chicago.

In small towns and cities across the country during the 1950s and '60s, the classic American diner conjured up images of shiny chrome, greasy spoon fare served up by waitresses with beehive hairdos and popular singers lighting up the jukebox.
The diners by this point were on their feet, and I realized Edmundo Pina was leading my wife in a joyful pachanga. I looked back at the elderly musicians and pondered what a dozen-odd American seniors of assorted races would be doing on a Friday night.

This is the historic diner in Fort Pierce where we hung out as teenagers. That was sixty years ago. Back then it was a drive-in with some eat-in space. Hamburgers, fried chicken, shrimp-in-a-basket, cold drinks, coffee, are still in there. My wife asked me if I wanted to go in and get a cup of coffee so I could see how it looks. I said no. I want to keep Higg's in my memory as it was in 1950.
