Van for special care home stolen

A passenger van used to transport the seven mentally challenged residents of the City View Special Care Home near Fredericton was stolen on the weekend.

Larry and Kathy Mills, who have been running the special care home since 2003, hope the thieves read about how important the vehicle is and give it back.

"That threw a wrench into us, it really did," said Larry Mills in an interview Tuesday.

"If they see this and put it somewhere where somebody can find it, hey, I'm happy with that."

"If they stole the stuff inside that's OK. We can replace it.

"We can't replace that van."

The Mills left the passenger van at a car rental agency on Hanwell Road on Friday while they rented another vehicle and went away for the weekend. When they came back on Sunday morning it was gone.

He said the vehicle is a dark blue 2003 Ford Econoline eight-passenger van with mag wheels, dual exhaust, a Kenwood stereo and speakers, satellite radio, new air conditioning in the front and back and two First Aid kits.

The van has New Brunswick licence plates with the number CNT-091.

"It's the only one of its kind around," he said.

"It was equipped to haul our residents."

"They just loved going out even for a drive just anywhere."

Among the personal items in the vehicle was Larry Mills' favourite Elvis figure which hung from the rear-view mirror.

Kathy Mills said the van has a lot of sentimental value.

"It's been everywhere," she said. "We've been on a lot of trips in it."

Kathy Mills said their residents are fond of the vehicle. She said one of their residents cried when they heard it was stolen.

"It will probably be damaged and we'll never get it back. But there is no harm in trying," she said.

Until the van is returned, the Mills are transporting their residents in a smaller rented van that doesn't accommodate everyone.

"That's absolutely heartbreaking," said Larry Mills.

He said the police said vehicle thefts occur quite often and thieves are sometimes looking for a car or van to fill a particular order for stolen parts.

The police said vans are also popular to steal because they can be used for transporting other stolen goods, said Kathy Mills.

Fredericton Police Force spokesman Const. Rick Mooney said most stolen vehicles are recovered. He said there has been a slight increase in stolen vehicles in recent years but the numbers are relatively stable.
