Few parents enforce shower-before-pool rules that help prevent infections
Like unwelcome guests at a neighborhood party, chlorine-resistant germs can thrive in the pool.
Cryptosporidium is one of them. The microscopic parasite that causes diarrheal disease can be kept at bay by following the ‘shower before entering the water’ rule posted at public swimming pools and water parks. Yet according to the National Poll on Children’s Health , by the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital , only 26 percent of parents of elementary-age children think it’s important for kids to shower before jumping in.
And that’s troubling, said Matthew Davis , director of the poll and associate professor in the Child Health Evaluation and Research Unit at the U-M Medical School.
“It’s troubling because water parks can only do so much to battle cryptosporidium and other germs not killed by chlorine," Davis said. "What parents need to understand is they can play an extremely important role by making sure they and their kids shower before they use the water park.”
Thousands of Americans each year contract infections from germs and parasites present in fecal matter from recreational water, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Davis said showering before entering the water is a simple and effective way to reduce the spread of germs. Showering before swimming washes off germs on the body, thereby preventing their spread to others.
Water park staff and parents can work together to mitigate the risk of infections at public pool.
While staff can use new technology to manage risk of cryptosporidiosis, parents can do the following:
Young children especially should be washed thoroughly with soap and water in the diaper region before swimming. Adults should shower before hopping in the pool, too. Children should be taken on bathroom breaks or have their diapers checked often Remind children not to swallow the water. Do not allow children to swim or swim yourself when sick with diarrhea.
The online poll of 865 parents with children 5 to 12 was conducted in May, Davis said.

son is highly sensitive to chlorine what is best • Chemistry 201 ...
We have a small 15 ft x 42 inch quick set pool we are getting ready to set it up we had one several years ago and used chlorine based pool chemicals. Our son has autism and is extremely sensitive to multiple chemicals and had a negative reaction to just the smell of bleach someone was using to clean with in a store bathroom. Feingold diet recommends pristine blue but I am nervous about it not be effective enough to kill bacteria, my son has a week immune system due to high levels of toxins in his body. Our home is pretty free of all commercial cleaners we use natural based cleaning products mainly vinegar, baking soda, washing soda, 20 mule team borax, essential oils, and enzyme based cleaning products. The BBB method sounds great except for the bleach. What are my alternatives? True chlorine allergies are very very rare, but when they do occur it gets very challenging. Nearly everyone who thinks they are allergic to chlorine are actually allergic to chlorine disinfection byproducts, which can be dramatically lowered compared to what you tend to see by taking proper care of your pool. Your description does sound like a true chlorine sensitivity, but it is difficult to be sure.
ha - that is what I wish I was doing / had done (I am sat here smelling of chlorine!). Have you started job yet?
