Pennsylvania Turnpike may soon do away with cash option

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission is considering whether to transition to a cashless toll system, but truckers say the agency must keep a cash option.

The Commission has recently published an online survey and urged drivers, especially those who pay cash for the entry.

The most frequent users have E-ZPass, but some still prefer to pay cash, says OOIDA Senior Member Chris Behrens of the Brodheadsville, PA.

"There are many people out there who may not have good credit, so they may not be able to get E-ZPass," he said.

As part of a possible switch to all-electronic toll, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission E-ZPass encourage use, but would have an alternative way for customers to pay if they had no transponder. This option would involve a system that takes a picture of the vehicle license plate and sends an invoice to the owner of the vehicle.

Truck drivers are not likely to favor this alternative, says Behrens.He said he was ready to give up some privacy for E-ZPass and a paper trail in the office toll. But his willingness to forgo privacy additional stops there. He wonders why all transactions, including travel to transport personnel, should include a paper trail or photo.

"There are people who do not want people to know what they do. The last time I checked, we still have a right to privacy, but our privacy is being slowly taken away every day. If you just want to pay your money and go, you should have this right, "he said.

"It should still be an option to pay cash because there will be people who will not sign up for E-ZPass or want Big Brother peering over their shoulder."

Behrens said that the survey does not ask customers whether they prefer a cash option.

"There was not much of an investigation, really. There was not much at all," he said.
