The Grand Champion steer of last week's Shawnee County Fair, raised and owned by Alexa Tenpenny (right), bought a $1,600 premium donation -- money contributed beyond the market price -- at the fair's annual Livestock Auction. Local 4-H club members sold 102 animals, and regional businesses and individuals donated more than $45,000 to the youngsters who raised the animals.
The Grand Champion steer sold at the annual livestock auction of last week’s Shawnee County Fair drew a $1,600 premium donation for its owner, Alexa Tenpenny.
More than $45,000 in premium donations were made to Shawnee County 4-H members who sold 102 animals during the livestock auction, local 4-H organizers said in a news release.
Premium donations are amounts paid in excess of market price. 4-H members use the money to help pay production expenses in raising the animal being sold. Money generated above costs often provides the basis of a college fund, organizers say.
The other top premium donation ($1,000) paid during Saturday’s auction went to the Grand Champion swine raised by Taegan Miller.
