Anchor Bay Acquires Kevin Spacey Comedy 'Father Of Invention'

BEVERLY HILLS, CA -- Anchor Bay Films announced today the pick up of the comedy Father of Invention starring Academy Award™ winning actor Kevin Spacey (Horrible Bosses, American Beauty), Camilla Belle (10,000 BC, When a Stranger Calls), Heather Graham (Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, The Hangover) and Virginia Madsen (Sideways, The Number 23). The film was co-financed by Sunrise Films, LLC and debuted as an official selection at the Berlin International Film Festival. Anchor Bay Films has acquired all distribution rights in the U.S., U.K. as well as Australia and New Zealand. Bill Clark, President of Anchor Bay Entertainment, made the announcement.

“Father of Invention offers two hours of great laughs with a talented cast,” remarked Clark. “We have no doubt that audiences worldwide will enjoy it as much as our worldwide team will enjoy working on it.” “Kevin Spacey is one of the most versatile actors in our business and this film is proof of that,” stated Kevin Kasha, Executive Vice President of Worldwide Acquisitions and Co-productions. “It’s an excellent cast and Craig Robinson’s recent hits are proof that he has amazing comedic timing.” “With the expertise from Anchor Bay Films in the independent film marketplace as well as the ancillary platforms, they are the perfect strategic partner for this film,” commented Kia Jam, producer of the film. “We’re looking forward to working with them on Father of Invention.”

Kevin Spacey is Robert Axle, an eccentric inventor turned egomaniacal infomercial guru, who loses it all when one of his inventions maims thousands of customers. After eight years in a maximum security prison, Axle is ready to redeem his name and rebuild his billion dollar empire. But first, he must convince his estranged 22-year old daughter (Belle) to let him live with her and her quirky, over-protective roommates.

The film co-stars Craig Robinson (Hot Tub Time Machine, Pineapple Express) and newcomer Anna Anissimova.

Financing hell, and David Bergstein, while awful encumbrances to the filmmaking process, don’t necessarily predict a poor film, just a dreadful process.

Anchor Bay Films (Videos), as it often elects to, may not support the film theatrically (even when emprical evidence say it should!), but many films initiated in the late-hedge-fund-boom (pre & during the 2008 Lehman crash) are of a certain oldschool (studio imitation) sensibility, and lack a certain edge or the newer leaner hipper indies.

Why Can't Motorola Get Its Act Together?

Just like in the movie "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me," Motorola has lost its mojo. Motorola Mobility (NYSE: MMI) is one of the industry's more interesting stories. It is a story of rags to riches to rags, again and again.

Non-Review Review: Austin Powers – The Spy Who Shagged Me « the ...

I must admit I'm quite fond of Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. Maybe that's the way the film justified its direct predecessor - though Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery is very well video, then made more money at the box office in its opening weekend than the original film made during its theatrical run over. Of course, watching the film can detect cracks of development that completely envelop the franchise when the third film, Austin Powers: Goldmember, was released. However, while it’s probably not quite as good as the original, it’s still a damn entertaining film.

One of the major problems with the film is one that frequently hounds comedy sequels. the simple fact is that we’ve already seen a lot of this before. Whether it’s Mustafa falling to his not-quite-death or Austin’s string of puns after escaping a death trap and defeating a henchman, there’s a rather feeling that we’ve already been here and done that. The same jokes don’t have the same impact the second time around – which creates a bit of a dilemma for those putting together a comedy sequel. Audiences are going to see the film because of the jokes they laughed at the first time around, and so they want more of the same – give them something too different and you risk alienating them. However, if you stay too similar, you risk just offering more of the same.

Another major problem is simply that you can feel the bar is being lowered. The first movie wasn’t the most tasteful movie in existence, but I feel it managed to find a healthy balance between sophisticated ideas and crass execution. Here, there are moments which seem to exist solely to make the audience squirm – Austin confusing the office coffee pot with a stool sample, for example. This really ended up being carried to even further extremes in the movie that would follow, but the bad taste is still present here.

On the other hand, there’s a lot to like. It offsets some of the excess, in my opinion.
