Fremont man charged with abusing 2-year-old

FREMONT -- A city man has been charged with assault and endangering children after admitting to shaking and slapping a 2-year-old.

Michael A. Lauffer, 20, was indicted by a Sandusky County grand jury and arraigned last week in Sandusky County Common Pleas Court on the two second-degree felony charges.

According to the indictment, Lauffer threw and shook the child, causing serious injuries, at his home on South Arch Street on July 23.

Police and paramedics first responded to the home around 9:30 p.m. that evening to the report of an unresponsive 2-year-old. The boy's mother said Lauffer takes care of the child while she works, because the father is in prison serving a sentence for manufacturing methamphetamine.

Detective Roger Oddo picked up the investigation after a doctor who examined the child reported abuse had occurred and the baby had been shaken.

After telling the detective on version of the events on July 23, Oddo told Lauffer his story did not match what the doctor was saying.

According to the report of the detective, Lauffer then changed his story and said that the child was agitated and crying and he "just lost," shaking the child and throwing him in the park.

Another family member later told police she had noticed bruises on the baby's face during a previous visit to his house. When asked, the parent said she was told the other children played with two tough years.

Lauffer later admitted that the bruising to Oddo were slapping him in the face of the baby in the past. He added that he would sometimes leave marks on the body of the child when he spank on the legs.

Lauffer was arrested at his home by Fremont police officers on the charges Friday and arraigned before Common Pleas Judge Barbara Ansted. He pleaded not guilty to the charges and the court appointed attorney Ruth Moreland to represent the man.

Lauffer is being held at Sandusky County Jail on $100,000 bail set by Ansted during the arraignment.

It is being railroaded even if it was not there when the situation occurred that led to his death. I am very close with this family, and were out of this since the very beginning. I didn't find out about it till after the fact that she was gone.. And as i new father I had no clue as to what was going on with her. Because i was always informed by her mother that she was sick from the flue or a viral infection. " " on another note, if kaylee's mother had been keeping me updated on the status and health of my own daughter, none of this likely would have happened. her mother spent most of her time with kaylee while i was out working my butt off to make money to support them both. sorry, but i am not capable of being in more then one place at any given time. i cannot work and take care of my child at the same time. for those of you that do not know the proper details of this situation, you should keep your thoughts to your selves. if you even THINK you know what's going on and don't, try asking some one who WOULD know, and not just jumping to conclusions.
