Though illegal, market grows for short-term vacation rentals

Honolulu has had a long-running controversy over short-term real estate rentals.

There are a few exceptions, but most of the properties on the market as vacation rentals or bed-and-breakfasts are illegal.

Still, dozens of homeowners persist in advertising their properties on websites such as Vacation Rentals by Owner, or vrbo.com , and the law is rarely enforced, as a report in Civil Beat earlier this year pointed out.

It’s not just Honolulu. The New York Times reported Thursday that homeowners in San Francisco are converting their apartments to what are essentially hotel rooms for short-term rental. It’s illegal there, too, but the Times points out that the law is ”essentially unenforced.”

And a story Thursday on the real estate industry site Inman.com tells how a couple of friends with some extra space founded a website called Airbnb by renting air mattresses out during a design conference when most of the hotels were booked.

People can advertise anything on the site from a mattress on a living room floor for $29 per night to a five-bedroom home for several thousand dollars.

The company started in San Francisco, but it’s already hopped across the Pacific to Hawaii — a quick check for accommodations in Honolulu yielded 104 results. A search for Lahaina — short-term rentals are mostly illegal on Maui, too — returned 144 results.
