Baker Heritage Museum hosts summer camp for kids (Includes first-hand account)
The instructors for this year's summer camp were Maggie Lindley and Matt Banta, both of whom work as teachers in Sweet Home, Oregon. Ms. Lindley is a high school teacher and Mr. Banta teaches health classes and coaches high school football. Ms. Lindley and Mr. Banta were invited to be camp instructors by Baker Heritage Museum Director Chris Cantrell. Day 1 of the summer camp was about getting to know the inside of the Baker Heritage Museum. On this day, the children filled out their own name tags, had their individual pictures taken, and learned all about the rules of the summer camp. They also did a scavenger hunt and put together their own individual journals so they could keep a special record of what they accomplished or learned each day. Day 2 of the summer camp was learning all about the different variety of rocks that exist in Eastern Oregon and other areas of the world, including active volcanoes. The children learned a lot about the history and importance of active volcanoes, how they naturally develop, and the different variety of minerals and rocks that form as a result of volcanic activity. After learning about volcanoes, the children did a 30-minute scavenger hunt for rocks and minerals while exploring the 2,800-square foot Cavin Sisters rock collection exhibit at the Baker Heritage Museum. The Cavin Sisters spent a lifetime collecting thousands of rocks from all over the world, and their impressive collection was eventually donated to the Baker Heritage Museum. Next the children learned how to make and grow their own special crystals, which involved a special combination of torn-up bathroom sponges, blueing, ammonia, salt and food coloring dye. Each child placed these ingredients together in their own Styrofoam bowl. The bowls were then placed on a kitchen counter top inside the Baker Heritage Museum, where they would sit and cultivate undisturbed for the next 3 days. Ms. Lindley explained to the children how the Mintos candy caused a chain-reaction with the air inside the bottle of Diet Coke. As a result, it forced the soda pop to spurt a 7-foot spraying geyser of liquid foam into the air. An active volcano basically operates in a similar manner when magma and underground seismic activity are combined together to create an explosive result.Mentos Volcano With Pictures - News

Soda is fizzy because it has carbon dioxide pumped into it at the soda bottle plant. The carbon dioxide bubbles just sit there in the soda until you open the top. When you open the top some of the bubble escape making that “whisssssh” sound.
Each mentos candy has a bunch of pits on the surface. The pits are so small you can barely see them. Under a microscope the a mento would look like a golf ball.
