Scooter fans help heroes with ride through town
MAD MODS motored through a market town for a charity ride and concert.
Around 40 Lambretta and Vespa scooters, some with an impressive collection of mirrors, lights, flags and badges, powered through Wootton Bassett in aid of war wounded charity Help For Heroes.
The event – Mad Mod Saturday – set off from RAF Lyneham and passed through the High Street in Wootton Bassett where the riders were greeted by the town’s mayor, Paul Heaphy.
Organised by the Last Great Act of Defiance Scooter Club and the Incrowd Scooter Club of Swindon, the scooter armada headed over to nearby Riffs Bar where bands, including Small World, DC Fontana and The Universal.
Mic Bright, of Rodbourne , who organised the event said it had been a success and he hoped to raise around £2,000.
He said: “We had more than 100 people for the gig and about 40 for the scooter run.
“Quite a few people came out and made a donation.
“We just wanted to bring the scooters through Wootton Bassett because the town has been fantastic over the last few years.
“All the guys, the bands and the DJs are doing it for free and we all just want to do a much as we can for the guys fighting abroad.
“I just think they get a rough deal and Help for Heroes is a worthy charity. Last year we ran this event and raised enough to buy a soldier a new leg – that’s what it is all about.
“It’s also for Wootton Bassett and we are chuffed they got the Royal title. It’s our way of saying thank you.
“It’s hard to judge how much we are going to raise but I would say around £2,000. We’ve got sponsorship to cover the costs of the bands’ travel and Andy at Riffs gave us the venue for free.
“We had people come from all over the place. One band is from Liverpool and another is from Birmingham, while some of the guys have come from Crawley.”
The founder of the Last Great Act of Defiance Scooter Club, Gerard James, 43, travelled up from Crawley, in West Sussex, for the event.
He said: “We just came down to support Mic and do what we can – it’s not about being pro-war.
