Teacher Jennifer Mscisz Is "All About P.E."
Would be a huge understatement. Jennifer Mscisz has an enthusiastic spirit that cannot be contained. She faithfully jogs every morning, plays basketball and soccer, has competed in a duathlon, all while raising her two kids with her husband Mike, a Wenham police officer. The kids? Morgan, 12, and Jared, 10, are multi-sport athletes as well, which explains why the Mscisz clan can be found at hockey rinks, soccer fields and lacrosse matches across Massachusetts, many other states, and even Canada, a mere ten months out of the year.
If just reading this makes you tired, hang on, she’s just getting started.
She brings this vigor to work, too. Now entering her 20th year in the Danvers school system, Mscisz began teaching health at the high and middle school levels, and for the past five years has taught physical education at Thorpe Elementary School.
But Mscisz noticed a difference when moving from the health classroom to the gymnasium environment: no visual aids.
Mscisz hated the idea that her students were repeatedly losing the first ten minutes of every class to stand around listening to instructions, often requiring clarifications on rules or processes, without visual help so they could truly understand the activities they were expected to participate in. Precious time was being wasted.
"I only get them for 60 minutes a day, so it was very frustrating losing time to the tediousness of explaining activities," she said. "First, I'd have to settle them down to listen, and then motivate them when it was finally time to start."
"Kids are visual, just like us," she continued. "Teachers use all kinds of visual aids in their classrooms, why should the gymnasium be any different?" So, Mscisz decided to draw out her instructions, and when she showed the sketches to her director, Gary Nihan, he encouraged her to take it to the next level. Within a few short months those sketches were transformed into full scale colorful posters, providing students with a much needed visual aid. "I actually have hundreds of these drawings. I chose my favorite 12 activities for the posters, but I plan on expanding and doing more," Mscisz said. First Lady Michelle Obama’s initiative " Let’s Move ," has put a national spotlight on the issue of children’s health, physical lifestyle and healthy eating, and those guidelines align with Mscisz’s philosophy. "I need to give them 60 minutes [of activity] under the Michelle Obama plan, and I can do that now. I’m so excited, the days of kids standing around in the gym are over!" So far the response from her students has been hugely positive. "Kids love the activities because they are fast moving and fun, and the posters are easy to understand, so students are immediately engaged and excited to participate. Thorpe Elementary has been the greatest and most rewarding experience for me. The students are always positive, excited, and motivated to come to P.E...they make me smile!
