PGA Tour golfer Zach Johnson was in Greer Tuesday driving cars at the BMW Performance Center, but did talk a little golf.
After failing to finish inside the top 20 over his first nine starts this year, the 2007 Masters champion has since tied for sixth at the Wells Fargo, tied for 12th at The Players and was fourth at Colonial. He earned $690,422 in that span to top $1 million for the eighth consecutive season.
“It’s all an ongoing process and I understand that,” Johnson said. “I never get too high or too low. I’ve been playing well now, but you can’t get caught up in that because golf will slap you down. I just had a humbling experience on the (BMW) track and golf is just as humbling. You feel like you have it and then the next moment you don’t.”
The seven-time PGA Tour winner never imagined he’d reach such heights, saying, “I never thought I’d be in this position. I always dreamed about being a professional athlete and reaching these levels, but never thought it would be reality. I appreciate the road to where I’ve gotten and the amount of work I’ve put in.”
He also remembers his roots as the Cedar Rapids, Iowa native recently pledged $1 million to two elementary schools in his hometown for various programs through his foundation.
“My wife and I believe to whom much is given, much is expected,” he said of his philanthropic endeavors.

Ranked No. 34 in the world and winner of the 2007 Masters, the longtime BMW enthusiast acted like a kid at Disney World as he drove and rode with a professional driver in a variety of SUV’s and sportier models.

Taking off like a rocket before cornering at high rates of speed and at some points stopping on a dime amid the high-pitched squeals and billowing smoke from the tires, Johnson emerged somewhat shaky but completely satisfied.

“My legs were a little weak, but came back pretty quickly,” he said. “A big part of it is trying to keep yourself steady, but the cars really do that for you. The seats grip you as you move with the turns and you’re fine. The technology is just crazy. You feel very safe and know your worst fears are not going to happen.

“It’s just amazing technology and when you combine that with somebody like (top instructor Jim Clark) behind the wheel and it’s art.”

The 35-year-old golfer was paying his first visit to the BMW track and had never driven on such a course before. After tackling the bumps, deep water and high rocky hills of the off-road facility, he then moved on, full of vigor, to the speed track.
