FinSys Update: US Existing Home Sales Down 3.8%;Perhaps Bottom

WASHINGTON (MNI) - The following are top events and news reported Tuesday ET in the global financial system by Market News International:

* U.S. sales of existing single-family homes, town homes, condominiums and cooperatives in May dropped 3.8% to 4.81 million after seasonal adjustment, perhaps hitting the bottom for the year, the National Association of Realtors reported Wednesday morning. Without seasonal adjustment, actual sales for March rose 4.8%. The May sales rate was down 15.3% from a year earlier, when sales were boosted by the first-time homebuyers' credit. Sales were down in three of the four geographic regions, with the West unchanged. The worst decline was in the Midwest, hard hit with bad weather during the month, sending sales down 6.4% to a level 22.7% below a year ago. [10:00 ET]

* The United States has not wavered from the belief that a strong dollar remains in its best interest, and it is up to lawmakers to demonstrate an ability to work together and make the economy stronger. "A strong dollar will always be in the interests of the United States," he declared. Geithner also said U.S. lawmakers will agree to a timely increase in the debt ceiling and are aware they must not delay the decision until the United States is at risk of defaulting on its obligations. "We are going to avoid a default crisis, no doubt about that," Geithner said at the Wall Street Journal's CFO Network Meeting. [09:37 ET and 11:01 ET]

* U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner Tuesday said it is very important that the European Union speaks with a "clear, more unified voice" regarding its strategy to combat the sovereign debt crisis. "You need a broader financial backstop that people view as credible," Geithner told a gathering of financial executives in Washington. "The simple rule of crisis management is you want to have a simple, clear, unified, declarative strategy. That would be helpful," he said. [10:24 ET]

* There is justification for private sector involvement in resolving the Greek debt crisis as long it doesn't result in a "credit event" or default, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said in a press conference Tuesday. He also said that privatization for Greece "is essential, but we must also have growth from 2013 at the latest." [08:44 ET]

* Spain's economy still faces "considerable" risks despite a "strong and wide-ranging" response by Spanish authorities to the fiscal and banking crisis, the International Monetary Fund said in a report issued Tuesday. "The repair of the economy is incomplete and risks are considerable," the IMF added. "Hence there can be no let-up in the reform momentum, including further enhancing the credibility of fiscal consolidation, completing financial sector restructuring, boldly strengthening labor market reforms, and following through on the structural reform agenda.
