THE “CASTAWAYS” SPORTS CLUB

Over the next decade, we won the V.D.C.A league and Knock Out Cups, plus the Victoria 6 a side competition on three occasions, but our crowning glory was to reach the Canadian Cricket final in Edmonton in 1975. We never did bring back the coveted Ross Robertson National Cricket trophy to our humble clubhouse, at that time located in the rodent infested abode close to the Government Buildings on Parry Street but in spite of an imperious 158 not out by one of our West Indian opponents we made a fist of a difficult task and “gave a first class chase” as the cricketing expression goes. Perhaps our real nemesis that weekend was our penchant for Bacardi rum, henceforth called “units” in club parlance and two solid nights of socializing in Edmonton did nothing to enhance our winning cause. Wonderful memories of some wonderful nights and some remarkable characters, too numerous to mention here. This was to be the first of many short North American tours, and two major European tours – all within that first fifteen years.

In spite of our casual exterior and apparent disregard for Victorian convention we continued to play attractive cricket , and in the midst of all that apparent social craziness we still produced three Canadian International Cricketers – a rare breed in Western Canada and most certainly on Vancouver Island. Although we are sleeping cricketing giants at the moment, a full kit remains in the basement awaiting the challenge of some youngster to put together a new breed of Castaway – no need to a name out of a bag this time, besides the Snug has now gone!

It was also encouraging to remember that in spite of individual and club success, we agreed unanimously in season 1970 to use LETTERS instead of NUMBERS on the backs of our shirts. Of course it needed Royal approval from the Barbarian R.F.C., whom we were told had exclusive rights on such violations. Neither was sought or given. In 1972, we changed LETTERS on our shirts to PATCHES depicting the nickname of the individual. But such nonsense is now a thing of the past. In hindsight, a touch puerile perhaps but it was different and very much in keeping with the Castaway style of the day.

It will have become noticeable at this stage that with the exception of the Founders, we avoided the danger of using names and events that carried personal tags. This seemed the only way to deal with a Club filled with so many wonderful characters and offbeat stories. Visit Discovery Street and I guarantee you that the International jerseys hanging from the ceiling, the many trophies and plaques on display from visiting overseas teams, our own trophies from domestic achievement and walls and walls of photographs will themselves bring the Club history alive – no commentary is really necessary.
