Genetically modified future

Experts project that by the year 2050 we will have over 10 billion people living on the planet, exhausted our fossil fuel reserves, and live in a totally different climate with extreme weather patterns. In order to account for these drastic changes, genetically engineered crops should be increased in our commercial food supply and grown for a biofuel source. Thus, the U.S. government should implement a new regulatory agency for a quicker and more efficient way to commercialize genetically modified crops.

Genetically modified crops are not strangers to our farms; they began commercial cultivation of transgenic (genetically modified) crops in 1996. In addition, the U.S. accounts for over 50 percent of the genetically engineered crops worldwide. Researchers have been able to engineer crops that produce pharmaceuticals, higher yields, drought and flood tolerance, increased nutritional content, and ethanol for renewable biofuel sources. With these engineering abilities our nation would be able to provide: food for the growing population, grow crops in harsh weather, medicate citizens in need, and provide a renewable energy source.

Some citizens disagree with use of genetically modified crops because of unknown health effects, possible allergens, the release of unwanted genetic information into the environment, and the creation of weed and insect resistance. However, no studies over the past 15 years of transgenic crops commercially grown in our farmlands and in research laboratories have displayed any of these characteristics. Agriculturalists have been breeding crops for thousands of years, selecting desirable traits to be seen in the product that the consumer receives. Even today, regulatory agencies treat traditionally bred crops the same as genetically engineered crops. Therefore, why not utilize the genetic technology at hand to create a quicker and more precise product that could provide the human race with resources for the future.

No Genetically Modified Crops in Bolivia! | Food & Water Watch

With Bolivia poised to pass legislation that would allow more genetically modified crops into the country, global food sovereignty activists find themselves organizing around a surprising target. The Law of Communal Agrarian Productivity Revolution (Ley de Revolución Productiva Comunitaria Agropecuaria) has passed through the Deputies and the Senate is now slated to vote on Tuesday, June 21.  The Bolivian Government is considered to be a strong ally of global justice movements and has spoken out forcefully in defense of the rights of the earth. With respect to their unique role on the global stage, we sent the following letter of concern .

Food & Water Watch works to ensure the food, water and fish we consume is safe, accessible and sustainable. So we can all enjoy and trust in what we eat and drink, we help people take charge of where their food comes from, keep clean, affordable, public tap water flowing freely to our homes, protect the environmental quality of oceans, force government to do its job protecting citizens, and educate about the importance of keeping shared resources under public control.
