Department of Consumer Protection announces recall of pool and spa drain covers

The Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) is alerting local consumers that the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the eight companies named, announced a voluntary recall of about one million pool and spa drain covers. The recalled drain covers were incorrectly rated to handle water flow, which could pose a possible entrapment hazard to swimmers and bathers, according to DCP. DCP said consumers should stop using the recalled products immediately.

The eight manufacturers that are named in this recall are: A&A Manufacturing, of Phoenix, Arizona; AquaStar Pool Products Inc., of San Diego, California; Color Match Pool Fittings, of Surprise, Arizona; Custom Molded Products, of Tyrone, Georgia; Hayward Pool Products, of Elizabeth, New Jersey; Pentair Water Pool and Spa, of Sanford, North Carolina; Rising Dragon USA, of E. Sweetwater, Tennessee; and Waterway Plastics, of Oxnard, California.

The products were manufactured in the United States and China and were sold by independent distributors to professional pool and spa builders and installers. The recalled pool and spa drain covers can be identified by the manufacturers’ name and model information listed below:

• Hayward Pool Products; Hayward-Pool.com; Dec. 2008 to April 2011; replacement or retrofit.

• Pentair Water Pool & Spa; PentairPool.com; June 2009 to April 2011; replacement or retrofit.

• Rising Dragon; RisingDragonPlastics.com; Dec. 2008 to April 2011; replacement or retrofit.

• Waterway; WaterwayPlastics.com; Dec. 2008 to April 2011; replacement or retrofit.

Pool owners/operators and consumers who have one of the recalled pool or spa drain covers should immediately contact the manufacturer to receive a replacement or retrofit, depending on their make and model. Except for kiddie pools, wading pools and in-ground spas, retrofit or replacement of installed covers are not required in pools with multiple drain systems or gravity drainage systems or for covers installed before December 19, 2008.
