Sycamores force game two against Shockers

The latter win forced a second championship game, which will be played Friday at 12:30 p.m.

The Sycamores took advantage of two Wichita State errors to score five unearned runs. They also got four solid innings from Brandon Flora, making his first start of the season, to rescue a depleted pitching staff.

“It was a gutty effort,’’ Indiana State coach Rick Heller said. “He really hasn’t pitched a whole lot -- he’s been more of a situation lefty. He toughed it out and it was a tremendous effort.’’

Flora had pitched 12-1/3 innings in 19 appearances prior to Thursday’s start. He gave up four hits and three runs before turning over a 3-3 game to Chris Machado in the fifth.

Machado pitched four scoreless innings to earn his fifth win of the season, but had to sweat through a tight ninth inning as the Shockers (38-25) rallied against closer Blake Drake.

Don Lambert’s single, the fourth hit of the inning, brought in Wichita State’s sixth run and left runners at first and second with two outs. Zach Stucky then hit a grounder to third baseman Koby Kraemer, who narrowly beat Tyler Coughenour to the bag to end the game.

Coughenour and Wichita State coach Gene Stephenson both vehemently disagreed with umpire Wayne Harris’ call.

Asked about the call, Stephenson replied, “Look at the replay. See what you think.’’

Stephenson might have been even more upset with his team’s defense.

“We gave them the first three runs and contributed greatly to the next three,’’ Stephenson said. “We need to play better defense than we played today.
