Small Businesses Forge Ahead Despite Sputtering Economy

There have been signs lately that the economic recovery may be losing steam. The federal government reports that May was the weakest hiring period in eight months. And a recent survey by the National Federation of Independent Business found more small firms plan to downsize over the next three months than plan to expand. If that scenario bears out, it would be a setback for the local economy, which has seen healthy small business growth in recent times. WUWM’s Erin Toner reports on entrepreneurs who continue to take risks despite the still sputtering economy. Brucker says there have been tough months when she struggled to pay the store’s rent. But she’s had a lot of support over the years, including an understanding landlord and organizations willing to lend her money. One recent loan helped Blush Beauty build a new private room where customers can get facials or an airbrush tan. Now, Brucker’s considering further expansions. She wants to add a new lash bar and a nail bar, and possibly open new Blush boutiques in other parts of the city. While a national survey finds a majority of small businesses are pessimistic about the economy and plan to lay off workers in the coming months, Wendy Baumann sees plenty of local companies bucking that trend. Baumann is president of WWBIC, the Wisconsin Women’s Business Initiative Corporation. It borrows money from a variety of sources, including banks and the federal government, and then makes loans to mostly women- and minority-owned small businesses. Baumann says most WWBIC lending leads to job creation. The application on her desk now is from a construction firm in Kenosha that plans to bring on five new workers. Baumann says the surge in loan applications over the past few years is partly due to the financial crisis. She says banks have all but closed their doors to small businesses, seeing those types of loans as too risky. Baumann says that’s unfortunate because many entrepreneurs with good credit, lots of experience and great ideas deserve financial help.
