Transcript takes top journalism prize for third year
Photo editor Maegan Burr won seven total awards, including Best Photographer in the Transcript’s circulation class — the third year in a row she’s been awarded that honor. Burr took firsts in the Photo Essay category for her images of the Deseret Peak Stampede Rodeo and in the Sports Action Photo category for her image of Todd Einerson holding on after his hand got caught while riding a bull in the Tooele County Fair Rodeo. In the Sports Feature category, Burr garnered first for “Speed and Honor,” a photo of Sam Verderico riding around Miller Motorsports Park against a backdrop of 2,010 flags set up to honor the military during the Lucas Oil Superbike Challenge practice session. She received a second place for Spot News for a photo of a trailer park fire in March in Tooele, and another second for a photo of Pfc. Jordan Byrd’s family as they were handed a flag during the fallen soldier’s graveside service at the Grantsville Cemetery. She won third place for a Feature Photo of Roy and Lola Hardman, who at the time of the photo had been married more than seven decades. Staff writer Lisa Christensen won five awards, all of which were first places. Her coverage of a gunman holding up Walgreens garnered this judge comment: “Good narrative, details about incident. It flows very well. Good accompanying photos, too.” The photos referred to were actually taken by Christensen as well. She also won two awards for her coverage of the death of Pfc. Jordan Byrd for her stories “A hero comes home” in the General News category, and “Community mourns fallen soldier” in the Military Reporting category. Christensen’s coverage of the Tooele County attorney keeping a sex abuse case from school officials garnered her another first-place prize. Her personality profile of Ron Rydalch, who played in the NFL as a Chicago Bear, also earned her a first place. Community news editor Sarah Miley received six awards, including first place for her continuing coverage of Rocky Mountain Power’s bid to construct a high-voltage transmission line through Tooele County. She received a second-place award in the Medical/Science Reporting category for “A Winnable War,” which discussed Tooele City Mayor Patrick Dunlavy’s childhood battle against polio in conjunction with the Tooele Valley Rotary Club’s efforts to help eradicate the disease.Education Humor Cartoons - News
