Hoover's Ghengis Grill calls for tactical dining that adds to the fun
HOOVER, Alabama -- Some say Genghis Khan was a tactical genius when it came to military matters. Certainly he had his share of success. At Genghis Grill, it helps if you, also, come armed with a deliberate plan. There are strategic decisions to be made here; lines to be navigated; noise levels to overcome.
But it’s really great fun.
The Dallas-based Genghis Grill recently “khanquered” Alabama with a Hoover store, the first in the state.
Genghis Grill is an adventure in eating. If you can imagine a dish, they can cook it.
Billed as “The Mongolian Stir Fry,” Genghis Grill is suitably loud and boisterous — but in an enjoyable way. Even the Mongol warriors on a huge poster on a wall decorated with slim spears are not scary. And while the process of bowl building, at first, seems daunting, there are plenty of friendly folks here to make sure you have a “battle plan” at the ready.
This is active dining, and here’s how it works:
Upon arrival, you are seated in the dining room. If you’re new to the restaurant, you get a black cocktail napkin under your drink. Your server will take your drink order and give you a small, metal bowl. Then she points you (or, if you’re a newbie, takes you over) to the food bar where you get to work building your bowl.
When filling your bowl, pile it high; the veggies cook down. That is really the very best advice you can get. Three of the five of us left a little hungry after our first visit.
