Meth lab, burglary yield up to 37 years
A Palmyra man will spend 14 to 37 years in state prison for his involvement in setting up a methamphetamine lab in Palmyra and for several burglaries that included a cabin at a church camp in Swatara Township last summer.Judge Charles T. Jones Jr. on Wednesday sentenced Dusty R. Alexander, 43, of 6 N. Harrison St. for offenses that included burglary, soliciting others to buy ingredients to make meth and risking a catastrophe.
Alexander and Jonathan Riegel, 34, Bernville, Berks County, were charged with breaking into a garage at the Youth for Christ Camp Barachel on July 19. They took a lawn tractor, a log splitter and other lawn equipment. The tractor and splitter were found crashed along a lane leading to the camp. A battery was missing from the tractor. Investigators discovered the burglary only after flames destroyed the cabin.
Then, a month later, on Aug. 17, police executed a search warrant at Alexander's home and found evidence of a meth lab in the apartment.
Chief Public Defender Brian Deiderick said Alexander's methamphetamine addiction was the reason he committed the offenses. Deiderick also said Alexander has a criminal record dating to 1984. He said his client needs ongoing treatment and supervision.
Nichole Eisenhart, assistant district attorney, said Alexander has been committing crimes for the past 25 years, and his first arrest was for a burglary.
She said a gas line was damaged inside the Youth for Christ cabin before Alexander and codefendant Jonathan Riegel left the building. According to a police affidavit, Alexander told state police that Riegel tried to cut a pipe in the game room area of the cabin. When Riegel cut the pipe, Alexander told investigators, they heard a big "whoosh" but did not smell any natural gas.
Alexander and Riegel were not charged with setting the fire that destroyed the cabin on July 20.
"I have no doubt, but for that burglary that cabin doesn't burn down," Eisenhart said.
"I did not set that fire," Alexander said, admitting he committed the burglary and methamphetamine offenses. "I'm sorry those people lost that cabin."
Alexander was also sentenced for burglaries at a home construction site in Bethel Township and the theft of construction equipment from the back of a pickup truck at a Union Township motel.
In addition to the prison sentence, Jones ordered Alexander to pay fines totaling $2,500 and restitution of more than $4,500.
