Betsy Jennings Overstreet

Mrs. Betsy Jennings Overstreet of Red Springs passed away June 17, 2011 in Wesley Pines Retirement Community at the age of 91.

Betsy was born in Lynchburg, Va. on May 4, 1920 to the late William B. and Laura D. Cassada Jennings. She felt blessed to have spent most of her 91 years bringing joy, love and blessings to all who knew her, including her late husband, Daniel Smith Overstreet. She was quite an amazing woman who influenced the young and the old; the well educated and less educated; the rich and the poor. Her devotion to others was phenomenal; her church was her life; the love of all her friends was so real; and her uncanny devotion to her family was unprecedented.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 19, 2011 at Trinity United Methodist Church with Mary Frances McClure officiating. A reception following the service will be held in the Trinity United Methodist Church fellowship hall.

Survivors are two daughters, Sandra Young of Wagram and Pam Paisley of Athens, Ga.; two sisters, Lucille Ferrell of Lynchburg, Va. and Mildred Almond of Charleston, S.C.; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, gifts are invited to be sent to Trinity United Methodist Church, 204 East Third Avenue, Red Springs, NC 28377 or to Wesley Pines Retirement Community, 100 Wesley Pines Road, Lumberton, NC 28358.

Hershey - A Petfinder Happy Tail

While we were waiting for a call to arrange a home visit for a pending dog adoption from a rescue, we saw Hershey's picture on Petfinder. Hershey was in the Robeson County Animal Shelter about 20 minutes away from us and had been there for just over 3 weeks having different holds placed on her; her time was running up. My husband called, I emailed and we were told she had a hold placed on her. We both called the next day not realizing the other called back to see if she had been picked up and placed a hold on her for us. I told our boys we were going to rescue a doggy - they were ecstatic and enjoyed shopping for her. We weren't sure if she would be ours or be fostered by us, there was something about her and we knew we couldn't just leave her there. Even though our minivan had decided to begin dying that day we drove to the shelter and met her. She was so quiet and calm surrounded by many barking, jumping dogs. Hershey looked at the kids then up at us leaning forward just a bit to sniff our hands through the fence. While my husband and the boys took her out for a walk I signed the paperwork- we were disappointed that we were not able to take her home that day but glad that they were taking her to the vet the next day for her spay, shots, and a nice good bath. We brought her home on New Year's Eve 2010 and she has fit in with our family perfectly, she has even become friends with our 3-legged cat. I couldn't have imagined a better dog for us.
