Stable, efficient and reliable... what's not to like about biomass?
"Biomass alone could meet the European Commission's 20%-by-2020 renewables target," says Jouni Kinni, Metso's sales manager for its power business.
"Up to now, there has been a lot of wind and solar growth in Europe, but wind has the big problem of intermittency, while biomass is the complete opposite and one of the most stable energy providers."
About €130m ($186m) was invested in the plant, of which €60m was spent on the Metso equipment. The facility uses mainly bark and forest residues as fuel to produce 50MW of electricity for the national grid and 74MW of process steam for the adjacent Smurfit Kappa pulp and paper mill.
The pulp and paper industry has been at the forefront of using this type of technology, which was developed in the mid-1980s and has since been scaled up. Mills generating 80-100MW were common in Nordic countries up to the early 1990s.
Today, the pulp and paper industry is cashing in on green electricity in France and the UK, with plants making part of their profit through power production. It is, however, a seven- to 12-year return on investment.
"We consider that biomass energy production is totally CO is captured in the plants as is released during combustion. The transportation and preparation involved cannot be calculated, but it is a very small portion of the total," Kinni tells Recharge .
"A typical load factor for a CHP plant is around 85-90% efficiency - so biomass is a very efficient way of generating electricity.
"It is not providing any disturbances to the grid system, so typically biomass plants are baseload units running at full capacity." Metso supplied the boiler, flue-gas cleaning and fuel-handling systems, as well as the complete automation of the power plant.
The Dalkia plant normally runs in CHP mode, as the paper mill needs steam when operating. However, should the plant switch to condensing mode - so that it produces only electricity - the efficiency can fall to as low as 32%.
Kinni says that perhaps the biggest obstacle holding back the rapid deployment of big projects is the way biomass is traded. The system isbased largely on one-to-one agreements, which presents lots of potential price risks for the future.
Proven solutions in bubbling fluidised-bed combustion, automation and fuel handling have enabled Dalkia to operate the power plant within the framework set by tight emissions guarantees. Also, Dalkia should be able to meet any higher standards resulting from tighter regulations.

A little background on the machine: La Marzocco - 2AV - 1997 - Single original owner, purchased new for a small Cafe in Lenox, Mass. She ran the business for about 2 years, with what appears to be minimal use on the machine. Cafe went under, she kept the machine and stored it in her basement. (I won't tell you what I offered, as it might make some jealous ) Drove to Mass., picked up the machine, and returned home. I was told when I purchased the machine that it had an electrical problem, but they couldn't tell me what it was. (I found a popped fuse in the brain, I think it would be amazing if that was the only issue....) As I've started my own project on an Elektra I have been doing some reading before I really do anything in August (won't have time until then). A big one is to make sure you don't burn up the heating element. I don't know if there's a switch on there to turn on the pump without the element, so you can fill the boiler first, but that's what you want to do. Alternately, just disconnect power from the element, then fill the boiler if the pump works. 1: Loctite? Is it necessary on any parts? I see on the older Not WELDED studs, you should use Loctite 573 on the gasket. I have the welded studs, and I'm using the paper gasket, is the Loctite necessary? Is it necessary anywhere else? I did see green compound a few components, but I can't for the life of me remember which, and have no photos of them. Heating element?
