Why roundworms can cause blindness in children

Roundworms are one of the most common intestinal worms found in pets, such as dogs and cats. Experts warn that in infection with roundworms can cause blindness and other symptoms in people. For this reason, yards and other areas where children play

should be kept free of animal faeces, reports Sade Oguntola.

Keeping pets like dogs certainly can keep people that frequently walk or exercise with their dogs active. This is perhaps no surprise to owner. They can tell when there is low blood sugar, sometimes even before patients themselves were aware of it. Children that mingle with dogs at infancy also stand a lower risk of developing eczema.

In fact, dog owners are better at dealing with stressful events. They are helped to avoid anxiety-related illnesses because dogs can act as “social catalysts,” leading to greater interaction between people and alleviating feelings of loneliness, especially among elderly patients with physical disabilities.

But cozying up with pets, whether it is a dog or cat  has risks. To be fair, the risk of catching a disease from sleeping with your pets, kissing them or just living in close proximity is low. But there is a risk, which wise pet owners can deflect with a few precautions. Pet owners can pick several diseases such as roundworm and lyme disease from their pets. Leptospirosis, a bacterial infection with potentially severe consequences, can be acquired from water contaminated by animal urine, too.

At highest risk are people whose immune systems are compromised or not fully developed. They include children younger than five years or people older than 65 years. People with weakened immune systems may include those with AIDS, chemotherapy patients or organ transplant recipients.

Although it is rare, roundworms carried by pets can spread to humans, especially children, and cause blindness (ocular toxocariasis), photophobia, redness of the eyes and other problems. Ocular toxocariasis, though rare, causes blindness in seven out of 10 of those affected by it, typically children.  It is caused by the ingestion of eggs of roundworms excreted in the faeces of dogs and cats.

Certainly, worm infestation can affect any part of the body. But, where a critical organ of the body is affected, calls for caution and the need for people to ensure that they maintain good home hygiene and proper care of their pets, declared Dr Balwaant Deostar, an eye expert at the Eleta Eye Institute, Ibadan, Oyo State.

Kittens will sometimes strain because of constipation to have a bowel movement which irritates the tissue causing it to bleed.  Sometimes, the tissue will remain out of the rectum for awhile and since it is a reddish color it seems like the cat is bleeding.  Straining during a bowel movement can also be from worms, bowel disease, or inflammation which should be checked by a vet.

Intestinal parasites, such as worms can lead to blood in cat stool.  ordinarily kittens will have cat blood in stool because of a parasitic nature, one of which is coccidiosis.  If this is the case a vet will need to get a stool sample to see if coccidia are present.

Cats with bacterial infections that cause colitis may have normal appearing stools, but you may also see spellbinding red blood on the stool or around the cat's rectum.  A vet will take a fecal smear to examine, or the stool may need to be cultured, so that other bacterial infections such Salmonella or E.coli are ruled out.

If your cat does not have any parasites, bowel disease or inflammation try changing their meals to a low fat and high fiber diet which will help with constipation manufacture their bowel movement much easier.

Some cats for whatever intuit or another may have blood in cat stool but the cat does not seem to be affected by the problem.  If you feel unconvertible about the situation have your veterinarian continue to check out your cat for additional problems.  You might also want to supplement your cat's daily diet with natural remedies that work with their body to heal and enhance immunity to fight off any infections and to generate a wholesome intestinal environment.
