Greg Zyla: 'Six-pack' and an AMC buyer

Q: Greg, I want to change my 68 Roadrunner’s non-original 440 engine from a single 4-barrel to a “six pack” setup. I’ve been checking availability on eBay and other auction sites, and am wondering if buying used is the way to go. A: Charlie, I would expect to pay a premium for this setup, regardless of whether it is used or new.

First, there are two distinct manifolds that were OEM items. One was an aluminum intake supplied by Vic Edelbrock. When the demand became so great, Chrysler decided to cancel aluminum intake orders from Edelbrock (a big mistake) and produce its own, much heavier, cast iron intake as standard equipment. This all happened in late 1969 through 1970.

As for pricing, if it were me, I'd purchase a brand new Six-Pack Edelbrock aluminum intake Part No. 2475. These aluminum intakes are reasonably priced at an average of $320. However, this is just the start, as the carbs, linkage and air cleaner really add to the price.

The Holley 2-barrel carbs are not cheap, and Holley and MOPAR performance know they have a monopoly on these in demand carbs. Sadly, the three 2-barrels will cost you about $1,200 if bought in a package, and more if purchased individually. (Come on Holley - give us a break!).

Add the intake and linkage ($83), fuel lines ($75), gasket set ($14), air cleaner assembly ($340) and you'll quickly be at $2,000. I've seen them cheaper used, but many of the used units need lots of work. Additionally, good used units run what new units cost these days, so I’d lean toward new since your car is not a numbers matching restoration. You can buy the complete new kit for about $2,200 or less if you shop diligently.

Good luck in your search, and if you can afford the new units, you’ll know they are truly ready to bolt on and go.

Q: I've written to you before and am hoping to buy an AMC car. What do you feel is one of the best AMC buys, currently, for something I can drive and enjoy on the weekends? It does not have to be show quality. Andy from Maine.

A: Andy, I’d first look for a 1968 to 1974 Javelin/AMX. These are nice cars that are currently appreciating in value. If you find a 390 or 401 V8 powered Javelin/AMX, all the better, although a 290 V8 is fine as is a 6-cylinder. Look in the $6,000 to $12,500 range.

Trouble setting up email using K9

I had read somewhere that the account on the dx is suppose to be imap. I tried, I really did. I researched for almost 6 hours today trying everything from different ports, different security and different servers! When I finally did find something, it conflicted with the POP account on the desktop and the desktop account kept asking for a new password and when I supplied it, I received an error about the account already being in use.
