Life's a beach for Baldwin County "staycationers"

GULF SHORES, Alabama -- Residents of Baldwin County , a large area by anyone’s standards, have the best selection of a variety of worlds: hunting and fishing, arts and entertainment, and, of course, the beach. Sometimes as locals, though, we get a little jaded by the day-to-day activity, causing us to take the bountiful opportunities for granted.

I'm Jessica Sawyer Rigby, and for the Baldwin Register's special section - 'Baldwin 2011: People. Progress. Possibilities' - my Baldwin coworker, Tina Covington, and I embarked on a mission to be tourists on our county's shores. On a sunny Saturday in May, along with photographer Jon Hauge and Tina's daughter, Morgan Covington, we spent eight hours exploring all the fun we could find for $100 each. (Jon Hauge/Correspondent) With the recent popularity of the "staycation" fresh in our minds, my co-worker and I proposed an idea: a day at the beach for under $100 per person, whereby we would take off the "native" glasses and revisit as much fun as possible on our fair shores — in tourist mode. The result? A few new experiences and a whole lot of fun.

1. 9 a.m.: Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo – 1204 Gulf Shores Parkway, Gulf Shores

"The Little Zoo That Could" and its seemingly tireless director Patti Hall have been in the news for years now, since Hurricane Ivan destroyed much of the lay of the land there in 2004.

Established in 1989 as Zooland Animal Park, the nonprofit facility has been around since I was 8 years old, a fact that makes me even more ashamed to admit that I had never been there, especially since my partner in crime — fellow Baldwin Register staffer Tina Covington — had been there many times. In the spirit of being a tourist, this Monroe County native and my Baldwin counterpart made this the first stop of our day.

Admission is more than reasonable at $10 for adults, $8 for seniors, $7 for children and free for children under 2. We paid our admissions, and took advantage of the add-on attractions for our teenaged companion: $10 for a visit to the lemur cage and $5 for a trip in the Outback Encounters area with the kangaroos. With the purchase of $2 worth of animal food, we were ready to tour the zoo.

Just inside the entrance to the park was another new-to-the-zoo attraction: a pen of baby goats, bunnies and chickens. For just $1, children can go in and have a little one-on-one time with the animals in a safe environment. I’m a mom who typically has a camera handy for any photo-worthy opportunity, so this seems to be money well spent just for photos alone.
